[edit] My UpdateSettings.conf
Two observations:
- There's prevent_delete and prevent_change there, which aren't mentioned anywhere else. Are these supposed to be dont_delete and dont_change
- Silly gut feeling because I haven't tried the script yet, but... isn't auto_merge a bit too magical to be listed first in the proposed UpdateSettings.conf? My suggestion for a first change in default behavior would be to have it work mostly like the old UpdateSettings except for honoring hints. That would be a way to roll out changes "gradually".
In any case, the patch and the documentation look excellent! Kudos! :) --Hisham 20:44, 14 June 2006 (EDT)
[edit] RE: My UpdateSettings.conf
- prevent_*
- Yeah, that was a goof on my part. I renamed the feature halfway through development, and I forgot to update the docs.
- magical nature of auto_merge
- You may be right, but auto_merge is actually really conservative. If there's even a hint that something magical it was trying to do failed, it tries something else. All in all, there are actually 9 different ways auto_merge tries to do its job. If none of those attempts results in a patch where all the hunks work, it just fails and then other options are selected. I really should have finished the section on auto_merge
(still not done yet)before posting to -devel :)- Note While writing the how auto_merge works thing, I ran across a moderately-severe flaw in auto_merge (described as the second to last limitation). I already have a fix for this planned, but it'll take some time to implement. I'm adding a note about this in the section on UpdateSettings.conf as well. -- Dan 23:33, 14 June 2006 (EDT)
- honoring hints
- Should this be a hardcoded default, or should it be in Scripts/Resources/Defaults/UpdateSettings.conf?
-- Dan 20:57, 14 June 2006 (EDT)
- Re: hints: I thought of it as a default value for UpdateSettings.conf, at least at first. On the wishlist department, I think I'd like to use something between "quick" and "interactive"... honor hints and .conf, but still prompt before doing some of the less obvious stuff such as merge. -- Hisham 16:53, 15 June 2006 (EDT)
- Re: hints
- Sorry, I didn't see this before. Next patch I release will include a default in UpdateSettings.conf that'll do that. As for your wishlist item, you can already achieve that with UpdateSettings.conf. Just put prompt_user in the updateOrder above the stuff you don't want done automatically, and use the --quick mode. If you want, you can even prevent hints from requesting less obvious operations by specifying a hintsAllowed array.
